Vortex blob methods applied to interfacial motion

چکیده

We develop a boundary integral method for computing the motion of an interface separating two incompressible, inviscid fluids. The velocity integral is regularized, so that the vortex sheet on the interface is replaced by a sum of ‘‘blobs’’ of vorticity. The regularization allows control of physical instabilities. We design a class of high order blob methods and analyze the errors. Numerical tests suggest that the blob size should be scaled with the local spacing of the interfacial markers. For a vortex sheet in one fluid, with a first-order kernel, we obtain a spiral roll-up similar to Krasny [J. Comput. Phys. 65 (1986) 292], but the higher order kernels lead to more detailed structure. We verify the accuracy of the new method by computing a liquid–gas interface with Rayleigh–Taylor instability. We then apply the method to the more difficult case of Rayleigh–Taylor flow separating two fluids of positive density, a case for which the regularization appears to be essential, as found by Kerr and Tryggvason [both J. Comput. Phys. 76 (1988) 48; 75 (1988) 253]. We use a ‘‘blob’’ regularization in certain local terms in the evolution equations as well as in the velocity integral. We find strong evidence that improved spatial resolution with fixed blob size leads to a converged, regularized solution without numerical instabilities. However, it is not clear that there is a weak limit as the regularization is decreased. 2003 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. AMS: 65D30; 65R20; 76B47; 76B70

High Reynolds Viscous Flow Simulation Past the Elliptical Airfoil by Random Vortex Blob

In this paper, numerical simulation for a two-dimensional viscous and incompressible flow past the elliptical airfoil is presented by Random Vortex Blob (RVB). RVB is a numerical technique to solve the incompressible, two-dimensional and unsteady Navier-Stocks equations by converting them to rotational non-primitive formulations. In this method, the velocity vector at a certain point can be cal...

In this paper, using vortex blob method (VBM), turbulent flow in a channel is studied and physical concepts of turbulence are obtained and discussed. At first, time-averaged velocities,  and , and then their fluctuations are calculated. To clarify turbulence structures, velocity fluctuations and  are plotted. It is observed that turbulence structures occupy different positions and move with con...

Vortex Sheet Computations: Roll-Up, Wakes, Separation

Chorin's vortex blob method has been proposed as a way to extend vortex sheet motion past the singularity formation time, into the physically important roll-up regime. Basic questions are: 1. Does the vortex blob method converge to an infinite spiral as the smoothing parameter tends to zero? 2. Do vortex blob computations approximate real fluid motion? This paper will present and discuss three ...

Vortex Sheet Roll-up Due to the Motion of a Flat Plate

The vortex-blob method is extended to compute vortex sheet separation at a sharp edge. A smoothing parameter con trols the amount of detail occuring in the rolled-up spiral. Cal culations are presented for the case of vortex sheet roll-up due to an impulsively started flat plate.

Comparison of regularizations of vortex sheet motion

This paper presents a numerical comparison of two regularizations of the Euler equations, namely, the vortex blob regularization and regularization by physical viscosity. The initial condition is a flat vortex sheet whose vorticity has been smoothed by convolution. The sheet rolls up into a vortex pair. We compute the frequency of oscillations in the core vorticity and scale it using results fo...
